Easily confused for a stone, or a prickly plant, this small heavy egg is naturally well disguised from predators, it's strange appearance caused the first to be found by a Geologist instead of a pet-seeker.

“Benj, come on!” I gave a tug to the leash connected to the collar of my brown and white mottled skordivek, “Heel!” Normally an obedient skordie, I was amazed when she would not follow the command and continued to sniff at a clump of grass sprouting mud.

Flustered and confused at my eleven-month-old skordie, I snapped my fingers to try and gain her attention—it was much too cold outside to be lolly-gagging around. She ignored my finger snapping to continue shuffling around the mound of dirt—dirt that, may I say, was at odds with the ever-whiteness of the land. Mounds of snow could be seen everywhere and the temperature seemed (at least to me!) to be dropping the longer we stayed where we were (and why wasn’t that piece of mud buried under the snow like the rest of the forsaken dirt?!). Benj had seemed to zero in on the clump of mud, her eyeless face seeming to sense it the moment we came into its facility, causing her body to speed towards her new-found fascination. I'd never known she loved dirt so much until now. Now being days before Christmas, in the middle of the night...

I was at odds with what to do. It was either drag her away and hope she didn’t decide to turn her teeth on her leash (again) which would result in me chasing after her and spending more time outside in the cold than was needed...or kicking the piece of mud to high heaven.

I optioned to do something else entirely after imagining myself cleaning the mud from my boots.

Crouching low, I gave Benj a pet on the head. She smiled toothily before returning her attention to the semi-grassy mound of mud on the ground. I picked the mound of mud up—which was somewhat heavy and hard to the touch—and successfully gained the attention of my skordie. I pulled out a plastic bag (oh yes, I am a responsible skordie owner!) and placed the clump of mud into the bag before placing it into my pocket. We had no more problems on our walk back to the house a mile away.

Where’s the clump of mud now? Oh, Benj is taking care of it as though it’s a pup. Perhaps I should take her to a vet or something. You know the funny thing? I realized after I’d made it home that I could have easily picked my skordie up as opposed to picking up the dirt—that’s what I get for habitually walking my pets. Ah well. Benj is happy and I’m happy (as long as she continues to keep the mound of dirt in her basket and not on my floor, or sheets, or clothes...).
